The African mouthbow consists of a flexible stick strung end to end with a taut wire. The mouth is placed around the wire and by varying the size and shape of the mouth cavity whilst striking it, various overtones can be isolated and resonated. The sound can be dampened intermittently by placing a stick against the wire. The rare, African 'voodoo instrument' consists of a single wire stretched within a piece of bamboo which is struck rhythmically with a stick. The wire is intermittently muted with the fingers. The orutu is a one-stringed African fiddle played with a rudimentary bow.
