Sampleism Help

Frequent Questions

What Is This Site?

Sampleism is a community-based sample library outlet. Here you will find a deep resource of cool, unique, inspiring and individual sounds made by talented people from all around the globe. These creative folk produce independent sample libraries, loops, instruments, VSTi's and audio, and happily share their abundent output with a global audience of musical maestros. Yep — that includes you!

Unlike other sample library websites all our content is user-created, self-submitted and community driven. This means you will find new, unique, cool, inspiring sounds here that you will never find on other sites; companies that have to wait for music scenes to become mainstream enough to justify the cost of a few intense studio days producing formulaic, flavourless pap. There is no single voice, style, or preference influencing the content here. Just the ears, wisdom, voice and noise of the crowd. Tell us what you want, and show us what makes your speakers smile.

The best thing is that anybody can get involved — there are no limits, barriers or red tape. You, too, can sell your latest and greatest audio masterpieces, ingredients and off-cuts on the site and get paid for it!

How Does This Work?

Imagine Mr X has just finished his latest track and has a load of sounds left over. He produced a batch of WAV loops and uber-cool drum sounds for his production but they are sat on his hard-drive doing nothing. So, he decides to upload them to Sampleism. Whoa, so you now have the opportunity to buy these sounds and use them to craft your next release too. Good, eh?

Michael Bietenholz has been recording the sounds of an inter-stellar telescope as it tracks quasers in the night sky. He drops these sounds into Kontakt and creates a brand-new playable instrument. He then uses this Kontakt kit to create sound effects for a short animated film he is working on. After he finishes work he decides to upload the Kontakt kit to Sampleism and offer it to you, so you too can play with this beautiful little instrument. Cool? We think so…

You have just spent the last 2 weeks sculpting a organic soundscapes and ambient sound effects to use as a backdrop in a new feature-length movie. You have piles of unused audio on your hard drive… What a waste! Don't let it sit there gathering virtual dust. Upload it to Sampleism, let other people experience these sounds. Spread the knowledge and your sounds around the world and get paid for it in process!

Or how about DJ Cleopatriotika who has inherited her grandfather's custom-made vintage waveform discombobulator? It has great sentimental value to her but it's raw, tube-based sound does not suit her post-dub, neo-classical digital-grungecore aesthetics. An hour of happy sampling later and she has shared a set of unique timbral textures with the community, documented a rare part of musical history, and covered its maintainence and restoration costs.

What Do I Earn as a Sample Producer?

You earn a certain percentage for every sale you make. The percentage you earn is dependant upon your subscription level. The higher your subscription, the higher your commission and the more features you can access. Our basic subscription is free and will allow you to test the layout and function of the site — as well as earning some cash! — before you upgrade.

Higher subscriptions give you far greater commission for every sale you make and also give you access to lots of other great features such as more storage space for your sample packs, increased promotional consideration and better statistical analysis.

You can track all of your sales in real time from your profile page and, when you are ready to withdraw your cash, just click the 'Request Payout' button, enter your PayPal email address and we will transfer your earnings to you via Paypal. It can take up to one week to process your request.

Who Are You People?

We are nice people who love audio in all it's forms and we'd like to combine our passion with yours. We aim to bring people together to share, create and collaborate in one place. Our mission is to provide an outlet for up and coming sample engineers and talented veterans; a place that will welcome them without restrictions or style biases and allow them to take full credit for their work.

Many sample library sites will re-market other peoples sounds as their own and exclusively claim the rights to those sounds forever. We don't do that. Everybody on Sampleism is regarded and respected for being the creative force behind what they produce.

Why Should I Join?

Why shouldn't you? It's free to sign-up, easy to use, and connects you with like-minded producers and listeners. It can help to expand your reach, establish your name, spread your sound, and earn you some cash.

Again, unlike other sample sites there are no exclusivity contracts or usage restrictions at Sampleism. You retain all rights to the sounds you sell here in songs; you can sell them elsewhere, use them as you wish, or even change your mind and have them removed from Sampleism (prior purchasers of your samples retain their right to use those sounds in tracks they make).

Is It Safe To Sign In Through My Social Network?

Yes! We use OpenID for sign-in and authentication. This means that we never know your password and you do not need to remember another e-mail/username and password pair. How convenient!

Please note that we do not automatically post anything to your social network(s) and will never do so without your explicit consent. We hate spam just as much as you do.

Are My Banking Details Safe?

Yes, again! SagePay is our payment gateway and all your commercial transactions at Sampleism occur directly and securely with them. We never know, receive, or store any of your banking details.

SagePay support payments made through PayPal — the number one provider of secure online instant transactions.

What Can I Upload?

More precisely, we deal in zip files containing audio samples. We prefer zip files because they are well understood, can be easily used on all platforms, and don't require additional software to be installed to pack or unpack their contents.

Zip archives uploaded for sale can be as large as 1 GB in size on our free tier, or even larger for subscribers — check the subscription overview for more details. Smaller archives available for free download as a preview kit have to be smaller than 10 MB.

Do ensure that the sample kits you upload do not break any laws, and that you have obtained all necessary rights, licenses and clearances for their sale through us. We will remove violating content and ban users who upload it.

How Do I Upload a Kit?

Once you are signed in, uploading a new patch, kit or library is easy: just click the upload button at the top of the page.

You can then start uploading the zip file that contains your product. You can edit the title, tagline, price, description and other details of your kit by simply clicking in the boxes to start editing, then press enter to save your changes.

The most important button when editing and uploading is the hidden switch. When you add a new kit it is automatically hidden from public view (and thus sale) until you have entered all the correct information and you are happy with the various details.

What Are The Prices?

Other than a minimum price of £1.99 (UK sterling), you can set any price you like for each sample kit you sell at Sampleism.

The minimum price of £1.99 is to ensure that producers offer kits of respectable value to customers, and to ensure we cover our transactional and operational costs.

How do I connect with Soundcloud?

We highly recommend that sample engineers connect their Sampleism account to SoundCloud for the purposes of embedding demonstration files and audio widgets into their kit pages.

To connect with SoundCloud, first ensure you are signed into Sampleism, then visit your profile page and click the Connect button in the SoundCloud section. You will be asked to enter your SoundCloud credentials or to create an account if you are not already a SoundCloud user.

We recommend organising your audio demos on Soundcloud into sets. This lets you assign a collection of demos to a Sampleism kit rather than just a single track.

When you have connected your Sampleism account with SoundCloud you can associate any one of your SoundCloud tracks or sets with each sample kit you upload with the embed button on its edit page.
